Overload Fee Waivers

Once a student registers for 12 or more credits at Boise State University, they are required to pay full tuition and fees.  All credit hours on the registration form, including credit hours under audit status, credit hours for courses being repeated, and credit hours for workshops, count toward the 12 credits.  Developmental courses (such as ENGL 90 Developmental Writing or MATH 25 Elementary Algebra) count as 3 credits each toward the 12 credits, even though students earn no credits by taking these courses.

If a student enrolls in more than 18 credits in a semester an overload fee is imposed. Overload is billed at the per credit hour charge for each credit over 18. A student may request an overload fee waiver if there are extreme extenuating circumstances. A Request for Overload Fee Waiver must be completed and signed by the student’s advisor (if they have one), department chair and dean of the college indicating support for the request. A copy of the student’s unofficial transcripts, course schedule, explanation of the extenuating circumstances, and any other documentation must be included with the request. The request and supporting documentation is then submitted to the Associate Vice President for Undergraduate Studies (AVP) for approval.  The AVP will notify the advisor or department chair of her decision. It will be the advisor or department chair’s responsibility to notify the student of the decision. Typically no more than 1 or 2 overload credits will be waived. Each request will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
