Established by Congress in 1986, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation operates an educational scholarship program designed to provide opportunities for outstanding U.S. students with excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in, and potential for, careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.
In the spring of 2010, the Foundation will award scholarships to students who will be college juniors or seniors during the 2010-2011 academic year. In order to be considered for an award, students must be nominated by their institution. Boise State University’s faculty representative is Dr. Craig Hemmens, Director of the Honors College.
The competition for this scholarship is intense. Four-year institutions may only nominate the top 4 applicants from their university. Typically, more than 1,200 well-qualified nominees are considered for just 300 scholarships. The scholarship award covers eligible expenses up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. Junior scholarship recipients can expect to receive a maximum of two years of support. Senior scholarship recipients are eligible for a maximum of one year of support.
To be eligible, a student must be a current full-time sophomore or junior and must be pursuing a baccalaureate degree, have a B average or equivalent, stand in the upper fourth of the class, and be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or U.S. national, who will pursue a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering.
If you meet the eligibility requirements for this scholarship and wish to apply, please contact Rhonda Hughes or Dr. Craig Hemmens at 426-1208, or send an e-mail to rhughes@boisestate.edu for further information and instructions regarding the application process and internal deadlines. The online application will be available in September 2009 at http://www.act.org/goldwater/apply/index.html. The faculty representative’s submission deadline for all nominations is usually mid January of the award year. Please check with the faculty representative for deadline dates. Applications have to be submitted online from the Foundation’s website at www.act.org/goldwater/. No paper applications will be accepted.
