CONGRATULATIONS
To see photos and a video slideshow from the Spring Commencement ceremony, please visit go.boisestate.edu/springcommencement2013.The Spring Commencement will bring the University together for a traditional ceremony in the Taco Bell Arena to celebrate May graduates. The ceremony will include the processional and recessional of candidates as well as individual recognition of each person and hooding of the doctoral candidates.
About 1,500 graduates are expected to participate in the ceremony, setting yet another university record. There are 2,206 students eligible for 2,392 degrees and certificates, and 513 students are eligible for honors: 309 cum laude, 173 magna cum laude and 31 summa cum laude.
Wide screens are set up in the arena so family members can see the graduates “up close and personal” when their names are called and they receive their handshake and diploma cover from the Dean or Associate Dean of the college.
The spring Commencement student speaker is Joshua Watkins, from Kuna, who is graduating with bachelor’s degrees in both political science and communication. As a member of the Talkin’ Broncos, Boise State’s national champion speech and debate team, Watkins has been acknowledged as one of the 10 best collegiate public speakers in the nation. This fall he will enter the master’s program in politics and communication at the London School of Economics in England, with a long-term plan of obtaining a Ph.D. in mass communication en route to becoming a professor of media studies.
“I am hard-pressed to think of another university that would have given me such ample opportunities to explore who I am as a person and as a scholar —from competing for the national champion Talkin’ Broncos speech and debate team to conducting research in both the communication and political science departments to interning at Boise State Public Radio. The thing I appreciate most about my time at Boise State is that the education it gave me, inside and outside the classroom, has defined who I am.” – Joshua Watkins, 2013 spring Commencement student speaker.
