Career

Resources listed here will help you develop a successful and varied career.

Boise State University’s Statement of Shared Values describes the foundations of our commitment to the institution, our students, and our colleagues.

Employment and Workload

Policies that employees should know as stewards of the University’s resources and reputation are included in the Policy Manual. Policies of particular relevance to faculty are not always in particular sections of the Manual, though most can be found in the section on “Human Resources” or the section on “Academic Affairs: Faculty and Administration.” In order to be certain that you are accessing the most current version of policies, you should go directly to the Policy Manual and search, or use the tables of contents until you find what you need. Questions should be addressed to your department chair.

Evaluation

Policies on evaluation are also found in the Policy manual. There are three you should be sure to review:

Promotion and Tenure

Colleges and departments have their own policies and procedures, developed in line with University policies but more specific. Check both the University’s Policy Manual and with your department chair.

Leave Options

Policies on Sabbatical Leave, Family Medical Leave Act, Annual Leave, and leave for faculty with health conditions or disabilities are in the University’s Policy Manual.

Professional Development

Faculty Connections: This interdisciplinary mutual mentoring program has both group and one-on-one mentoring options. The program is voluntary and facilitates a learning relationship that goes both ways, not a transfer of knowledge from facilitators to participants. Participant forms are available for interested individuals. Contact Dr. Helen Lojek (426-1572 or hlojek@boisestate.edu) for additional information.

Campus workshops for professionals are offered by:

Skillsoft: Free Online courses. The Skillsoft catalog offers 800 on-line courses and thousands of on-line books.

Shared Leadership: This program introduces faculty and staff to practical leadership tools and provides an in-depth view of the University’s processes. The goal is to equip participants with the means to make significant contributions to the campus community and their individual units.

Opportunities to Teach Abroad: Contact International Programs for more information.

Service Learning: For information on involving students in community work that connects their coursework to off-campus situations, contact 426-2380 or servicelearning@boisestate.edu.

Honors Courses: For information on teaching in Boise State University’s Honors College, contact Dr. Craig Hemmens (426-3251 or chemmens@boisestate.edu).

Retirement and Emeritus

Policies on Voluntary Phased Retirement, Retirement, and Emeritus Status are in the Policy Manual. For information about the Emeritus Guild, contact Christy Echevarria (426-2035 or christyechevarria@boisestate.edu).
